New Mexico Anti-Militarism Summit

Statewide New Mexico Summit will address activism against the role of the military in the state of New Mexico. It will be held at the University of New Mexico October 21-23.

Historic Event - Statewide Anti-militarism Summit:
Break the Grip of the Military Industrial Complex on New Mexico!

Location and date: Friday, October 21 ­ Sunday, October 23, 2005
University of NM, KIVA Classroom, Albuquerque

The theme of the historic summit is the colonization of the land and people of NM by the Military Industrial Complex facilitates the colonization of land and people around the world. This is the first time activists from Farmington, Taos, Santa Fe, Dixon, Las Vegas, Albuquerque, Las Cruces,
Carlsbad, Silver City, El Paso has been held to oppose the
militarization of our state and nation.

Keynote speaker is Loring Wirbel on Friday, Oct. 21 at 7 pm in the UNM Kiva Classroom auditorium. Wirbel's biography is below. Wirbel will speak on the militarization of space and the role New Mexico plays in the placing of weapons in space.

Schedule:

* Friday, Oct 21, 7pm: Loring Wirbel, Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space on NMıs role in the militarization of space

* Saturday 8:30am ­12pm, Workshops: Military Recruiting, Nonviolent Direct Action, Independent Politics, Moving Peace from Personal to Community Action, and Reports from Communities around the State

* Saturday 1:30pm: The Military Industrial Complex in NM: What are the pieces that come together to form the MIC in NM and how do we build a statewide strategy to address them?

Loring Wirbel (<LWirbel@aol.com>) biography:

Loring Wirbel is a writer and peace activist in Colorado Springs, who serves on the board of directors of Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space, and of the Pikes Peak Justice and Peace Commission. He also works with Citizens for Peace founder Bill Sulzman
on studies of military bases and contractors in the Colorado area.

Loring is the author of "Star Wars: US Tools of Space Supremacy," and contributed a chapter to Carl Boggs compilation, "Masters of War." He is currently working on a book on modern mythology and its abuses. He has won awards from Project Censored twice, and is a columnist for
Electronic Engineering Times. He lives in Monument, Colo. with his wife, daughter, and pet menagerie.
