The Insatiable Beast: Nothing New
by Anthony Moss Wednesday, Jun. 14, 2006 at 11:53 AM

This morning, June 14, some 3000 Mexican Federal Preventive Police attempted to disrupt striking teachers in Oaxaca's historical district. Sound familiar?

Just some two and forty days after the repressions in Texcoco and San Salvador Atenco, the Mexican government is still out for the blood of those who speak out against bad government. Certainly nothing new these last few months, to be sure.

According to information from narconews.com and the Sixth Commission of the EZLN, Federal Preventive Police, said to have numbered in the thousands (again), tried to crush striking teachers of National Syndicate of Educational Workers Section 22 (SNTE in its Spanish initials) in Oaxaca's zocalo (center square) that had been going on since May.This is nothing new. The teachers try and do it every year when they can. There are an unconfirmed number of deaths, though teachers in Oaxaca report ten dead, one of them (again) a child. There are an unconfirmed number of arrests. The teachers' rebel radio station Radio Planton, was destroyed. This repression, sadly, is nothing new in Mexico.

This time, however, the dissidents have held their ground. The police were forced to retreat at around 10am to regroup. The center of Oaxaca still belongs to its people and Seccion 22.

In a story called "The Story of Dreams", Subcomandante Marcos wrote that "To teach is the same as to struggle". This, too, is nothing new. Those below continue to struggle to reclaim what is rightfully theirs, be it land, culture, language, or the tools and means to teach.

Let us hope that Fox, Oaxaca State "Governor" Ulises Ruiz Ortiz, and the rest of the political class realize just how evil and fascist they appear in the eyes of others. One can repress many things through arrests, rapes, assassinations, beatings, etc...but the hopes and dreams of the people are not silent. Not now, not ever.

From the desert of the Other New Mexico
